    2003 Airplane Design Competition
Sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers
    Friday, February 21, 2003

    Objective:
Create an airplane design from paper products, with a design goal of maximum flight time

    Classes:
Open Class (any student or any adult)
Limited Class (any student up to and including 9th grade)

    Rules:
    Hand thrown launching method
Any kind of propulsion method is prohibited

    Open Class

Material: any paper or wood product (includes but not limited to cardboard, tongue
depressors, toothpick, etc...) may be used

Weight limit: the plane as it flies through the air must weigh 50 grams or less

Method of construction: any (includes but not limited to cutting or gluing)

    Limited Class

Material: one 8.5"x11" sheet of paper (we will supply the paper to be used in the
    competition)
one 3" length of scotch tape

Method of construction: only folding is allowed, no cutting or gluing, the scotch tape may be used to tape loose ends

Weight limit: total weight of one 8.5"x11" paper (supplied) and 3" length of scotch tape

    Scoring:
An official timer will establish the flight time; timer will start the clock as soon as the airplane leaves the contestant's hand. Flight time will be recorded for each person. Each person will be allowed 3 different designs with each design allowed one timed run OR 3 different timed run with the same plane. The best time will be recorded for each person.

    Prizes:
Prizes will be awarded for First, Second and Third Place.

    Notes:

Open class entrants may bring completed and assembled design(s)

Limited class entrants will have until the end of the day to finish their timed trials. Limited class entrants are encouraged to practice their building skills before they use the official material supplied.

    Questions and RSVP:
Please RSVP and address questions to Cathleen Davidson at cathleen@cecs.pdx.edu or (503) 725-4288.
